Marta Sanchez

Marta Sánchez is an Emeritus Professor of Chicano, US Latino, and Latin American Literature from the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. 

Sánchez, daughter of Mexican immigrants, born and raised in East Los Angeles. She joined ASU in 2004. From 1977 to 2004, she was a professor at the University of California, San Diego where she taught Chicano, Latin American and U.S. ethnic literatures. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the National Chicano Council for Higher Education, the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of California President's Office, and the Stanford Humanities Center. At UCSD, she participated in the establishment of UCSD’s Preuss Charter School (grades 6-12), aimed at addressing the low numbers of Latino and African American students in higher education, and served on its Advisory Board from 2000-2004. Sánchez has served on the editorial boards of Genders, Voces: Journal of Chicana/Latina Studies and Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism. She is on the advisory board to the journal MELUS, the Institute of Humanities Research at ASU, and was Series Editor for the Latinidad series of Rutgers University Press from 2008-2012.  Her current project is on the Spanish Language, Translation and Transnationalism. 

Since Fall 2007, she has taught courses in Spanish and English in TCLS: in Spanish, Chicano and Mexican Literature of Southwest North America Before 1917 and Modern Latin American Short Story; in English, Introduction to Chicano Literature, Introduction to Transborder Studies, Transborder Latino Expressive Culture, Border and Global Narratives, Comparative Bilingual Latino Poetics.  Previously, she taught graduate seminars in Spanish (Mexican American Literature and US-Mexico Border Studies) and English (Modern Chicano, African American, and Puerto Rican Narratives).
