Gregory M. Nielson has been affiliated with the School of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences since 1970 and is an Emeritus Professor from the School of Computing, Informatics and Decision Systems Engineering at Arizona State University, which he joined in 1983. His research has been continuously funded since his first Office of Naval Research Grant to ASU in 1972. His research and professional contributions continue to be highly regarded and cited ( "Gregory M. Nielson" into Google usually results in more than one half million hits)
Based upon professional statistics (ref. google scholar), Professor Nielson is in the top five percent in all three of the research areas of Visualization, Computer Graphics and Numerical Analysis and in the top 10 percent in the research area of Geometric Modeling.
Nielson graduated from Richfield, Utah High School in 1961.* He received his bachelor's degree in 1965 from the University of Utah and imeditately began teaching university courses in mathematics that very same year. In 1970, he obtained a doctorate and that same year started his teaching and researching career at ASU.
*BTW, the number 1961 is strobogrammatic which means that Prof. Nielson can wear his high school ring either way and the year reads correctly for both him and others! The next graduating class that can do this will be in the year 6009! (Possibly Prof. Nielson's Great^160 grandchild will wear such a ring!).

Nielson's paper "The side-vertex method for interpolating in triangles" published in 1979 is amongst the top 20 most highly cited papers of the Journal of Approximation Theory, which has been in publication for over 40 years with more than 3500 papers published.
Nielson's paper with his student, Bernd Hamann, "The asymptotic decider: resolving the ambiguity in marching cubes" published in 1991, is the overall 3rd most highly cited paper of the IEEE Visualization Conference Series which began in 1990. Nielson has said that he thinks this is one of his most clever and useful ideas for volume visualization!

Nielson's paper "On Marching Cubes" which appeared in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics in 2003 is among the top 20 most highly cited papers for this journal over the past 10 years.
Nielson's paper "Multivariate smoothing and interpolating splines" SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis 1974 was published nearly 40 years ago, yet they it continues to be currently cited.
One of Nielson's most notable (and maybe the most innovative) paper was never published as a refereed journal article. This is the TR 40 technical report of the Mathematics Department at ASU "Some piecewise polynomical alterrnatives to splines under tension". It has been continuously cited every year since it was written in the early 70s (nearly half a century ago!) Extremely few research papers have this longevity or influence! These curves (which are sometimes referred to as nu-splines) exploided for design purposes a disconnect between the continuity and smoothness properties of the graphs of component functions and the graphs of the resulting parametric curves. Parmetric curves with component functions which have very smooth graphs (no corners e. g.) can conveniently lead to parametric curve graphs with sharp features! (E. g. corners, Go figure! How can this happen??? Rather amazing and very useful!) This feature allows these curves and surfaces to be used for modeling buildings and other artifacts. "In Recognition of 1) Seminal Research in Geometry/Topology-Based ModelingAlgorithms for Visualization and for 2) Co-Founding the Visualization Conference and 3) Co-Founding the Journal "Transactions on Visualization & Computer Graphics."
Some excepts from acceptance speech: " Some people suffer from Triskaidekaphobia which is the fear of the number 13. In fact you may have noticed that some buildings don't even have a 13th floor. Actually, I am just the opposite. I have triskaidecphilia, that is the love of the number 13. The number 13 has always been lucky for me. My birthday is the 13th, my wife's birthday in the 13th and here I am in 2013 accepting this prestigous Visualization Career Award (and BTW the word Visualization has 13 letters. I recall the hectic times back in 1990 (yes, 10+13 years ago) when we had our very first Visualization Conference in San Francisco. One of the keynote panelists didn't show up until just seconds before the panel was to begin. Anyway with a few bumps we got through the first conference which was the beginning of a very successful series which we are all enjoying today."
