Andrea Avery

As Senior Implementation Strategist at ASU’s Next Education Workforce, Andrea helps to translate the patterns, insights, and lessons learned in the field into durable, scalable designs that support implementation of Next Education Workforce teams in real school contexts. 

Andrea’s work as a strategist and designer is informed by her 14 years of experience as a classroom teacher and as director of curriculum and instruction for a PK-12 school, in addition to her work providing coaching and consultation, program design, change leadership strategy, and technical assistance to schools and districts implementing competency-based learning models. 

Areas of special interest are creative writing and disability, especially in schools. Andrea is co-author (with Jen Soalt) of Let's Discuss: Practices for Equitable Student Participation in ELA Classrooms from Teachers College Press, as well as “Crip Your Civics: A Disability-Informed Approach to More Democratic Learning” in NCTE’s Building Civic Futures in Teacher Education; “A Face for my Autobiography: Lucy Grealy and Embodied Vulnerability” (Harvard Educational Review; and “#BlackCharactersMatter: If I’m Trying to Teach for Social Justice, Why Do All the Black Men and Boys on my Syllabus Die?” (Radical Teacher). She earned her BA (Music), MFA (Creative Writing), and Ed.D (Leadership and Innovation) at Arizona State University.
