Ramakrishna's research interests are in two areas -1) Biomaterials, and 2) Engineering Education. The problems in Biomaterials that he is interested in lie at the crossroads of Biology and Materials Science & Engineering. He investigates biological supramolecular assemblies such as proteins, membranes, and DNA that are capable of incorporating inorganic solids and precisely engineer their size, shape, and orientation at the nanometer scale. The work will lead to understanding the engineering design principles adopted by a variety of living systems such as plants, fungi and microbes. These are not only fascinating from the fundamental point of view but also have many potential applications. Specifically, in the areas of biosensors, environmental nanobiotechnology, and silicon-bio hybrid devices. He is committed to bring about innovations in science and engineering education by infusion of cutting-edge research through student-reseracher partnerships, visualization based technologies, and leading-edge telecommunications. He is acively engaged in designing innovative educatiuonal experiences for undergarduate students in engineering.
