Stephen K. Doig was the founding Knight Chair in Journalism, specializing in data reporting, at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication of Arizona State University. Before joining ASU in 1996, he was associate editor/research of the Miami Herald. Projects on which he worked at The Herald and at ASU have won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, the IRE Award, the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, the George Polk Award for Medical Reporting, and other awards. He stepped down from the Knight Chair in 2017 but remains on the Cronkite faculty teaching online courses in data journalism. During his 20-year career at The Herald, he also served variously as state capital bureau chief, science editor, aviation writer, pollster and lottery columnist. At ASU, he was selected twice as a Fulbright Distinguished Professor, to teach in Portugal and the Czech Republic. He is a political science graduate of Dartmouth College and a graduate of the Defense Information School, which trained him to be a combat correspondent for the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service for his work during the Vietnam War.
