Dr. Su Lin received her BS in Physics from Beijing Normal University, China, in 1982, and her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Rochester in 1990. After postdoctoral studies at Iowa State University, she joined the ASU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (now the School of Molecular Sciences) in November, 1991.
Dr. Lin manages the Ultrafast Laser Facility at ASU [https://cores.research.asu.edu/ultrafast-laser-facility/about]. This shared research resource provides advanced laser technologies and instruments for time-resolved spectroscopic and imaging measurements to observe chemical reactions in real time with temporal resolution down to the femtosecond time scale, and spatial resolution and sensitivity to the point where single molecule signals are detectable.
Dr. Lin’s research involves using ultrafast laser spectroscopy and microscopy techniques to study photo-induced energy transfer and charge separation reactions in protein complexes and artificial systems. One of her major research focuses is to explore the role of protein dynamics in electron transfer reactions on different time scales, using purple bacterial reaction center protein as a model system. She also collaborates with other PIs to study photophysical and photochemical processes in various photosynthetic proteins. Knowledges learned are applied to the design and construction of biophotonic devices on DNA platforms and nanomaterials.
