Cheshire Calhoun works in the areas of normative ethics, moral psychology, feminist philosophy, and lesbian and gay studies. Her publications include Moral Aims: Essays on the Importance of Getting it Right and Practicing Morality with Others (OUP 2016), Feminism, the Family, and the Politics of the Closet (OUP, 2000), two edited collections, What is an Emotion? (coedited with Robert C. Solomon, OUP, 1984) and Setting the Moral Compass: Essays by Women Philosophers (OUP, 2004), as well as essays on responsible persons, forgiveness, integrity, shame, common decency, and civility. Her book, Doing Valuable Time, centers on the interconnections between our capacity for evaluation and our temporality. That work includes essays on depression and demoralization, meaning in life, hope, boredom, commitment, and contentment. She is currently working on a series of essays on what it means to be a responsible person and on defining what she hopes will be a new subfield of moral philosophy--positive moral philosophy. Two of her essays were judged by The Philosopher's Annual to be among the top ten essays to appear in print in 1992 ("Changing One's Heart") and 2000 ("The Virtue of Civility"), and "Geographies of Meaningful Living" won the Journal of Applied Philosophy's prize for the best essay in volume 32.
