Carla van de Sande is interested in student engagement and the resources students’ use as they learn mathematics in both face-to-face and online environments. These resources include note-taking strategies, homework assistance (i.e., homework help communities), and study habits. One strand of this research targets the relationship between student engagement, learning outcomes, and the use of various instructional strategies (i.e., focusing on learning objectives, facilitating active student responding). Another strand of research involves exploring how students seek help and engage in learning activities outside of the classroom. For example, one set of projects examines the quality of help available in online homework help forums and compares alternative rating systems for providing feedback on their perceived helpfulness. Her main goal is to help students succeed by moving from ineffectual learning strategies that include dependency-oriented help seeking to more productive ways of participation.
