Douglas Kelley is a professor of communication studies in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and a Lincoln Professor of Applied Ethics at Arizona State University. His 1998 study, The Communication of Forgiveness, is the seminal piece of research on the communication of forgiveness, and launched two decades of work focusing on various forgiveness processes, culminating with the two-time award-winning book "Communicating Forgiveness" (2008) and "A Communicative Approach to Conflict, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation: Reimagining Our Relationships" (2019). A unique writing project, "Just Relationships: Living Out Social Justice as Mentor, Family, Friend, and Lover" explores ideas as to how we may live justly with one another in our personal relationships, treating each other with respect and love, and advocating for the re-humanization of our personal encounters. Other writing projects include "Marital Communication" and "Moral Talk Across the Lifespan: Creating Good Relationships."
Professor Kelley’s research has appeared in numerous professional journals, and he is recipient of the 2017 Bernard Brommel Award for Outstanding Research or Distinguished Service in Family Communication and the Centennial Professor Award at ASU. Doug teaches relationship-based courses and conducts workshops in the community on forgiveness and reconciliation, marital and family communication, conflict processes, relational communication (including intimacy and love), and inner-city families. Of particular note, he has long-standing relationships with various faith-communities and his service-learning course, Inner City Families, has placed students in a variety of community organizations for more than a decade.
