Karen Brown is the Director of Gifted and Accelerated Learning for Scottsdale Unified School District. She has taught and facilitated gifted education courses at ASU since 2010. Additionally Mrs. Brown consults with districts on Curriculum Mapping, Common Core Implementation, Curriculum Implementation, and Differentiation Strategies. She has presented at Arizona Association of Gifted and Talented (AAGT) and The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). She is the 2013 AAGT Teacher of the Year as well as the winner of the 2018 NAGC Master's and Specialist Award. She was selected as a Top 10 Teacher in Arizona and currently serves as an A+ School of Excellence Program Judge K-12. Curriculum development and differentiation is an area of expertise for Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Brown has co-authored two books, Differentiatied Lessons for All Learners and A Teacher's Guide to Flexible Grouping and Collaborative Learning. Her second book, A Teacher's Guide to Flexible Grouping and Collaborative Learning was selected as the NAGC 2019 Book of the Year and is a TAGT Legacy Award winner.
In her current role she work extensively with cluster teachers as well as gifted specialists and self-contained gifted classroom teachers to ensure that the instruction and curriculum provides the appropriate challenge and support for gifted and high achieving students. Mrs. Brown holds a Masters degree in Gifted Education as well as certifications in Elementary Education, Special Education Learning Disabilities and Emotional Handicapped and Administration. In 2009 she received her National Board Certification. In her 35+ years of teaching Mrs. Brown has taught students in grades kindergarten through graduate school. Her extensive experience enables her to support teachers at all levels.
On a more personal level, Karen is the mother of five wonderful children ranging in age from 23 to 30. Three of her children are identified gifted students making her understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by the gifted a very personal one. Karen loves to read and spend time with her family.
