Dr. Carr Kelman serves as associate director of the Center for Biodiversity Outcomes, manages an NSF grant on actionable science in conservation, and co-directs the Conservation Solutions Lab as well as the Collab-Lab with Professor Schoon. Her research investigates policy dimensions of sustainability issues, including adaptive collaborative governance of social-ecological systems, knowledge partnerships for actionable science, and how to manage tradeoffs and foster synergies between biodiversity conservation and human development. She has studied integrated conservation and development projects in Indonesian national parks, stewardship contracting in Arizona national forests, and most recently, the use of science and co-production of knowledge by conservation practitioners around the world. Two major themes in Dr. Carr Kelman's research are the complex relationships between conservation and development, and the design of nested, multi-scalar institutions for the collaborative governance of social-ecological systems.
She oversaw the implementation of the global development research program at ASU, which was funded by USAID Global Development Lab as a Research Innovation Fellowship, for five years. She teaches advanced sustainability problem solving, a graduate seminar on biodiversity conservation and collaborative management, and undergraduate courses on international development and on policy and governance for sustainability. She has also taught courses on environmental politics and corporate social responsibility at other universities.
