Justin Jager is an Associate Professor of Family and Human Development at Arizona State University. He received his PhD in Developmental Psychology from The University of Michigan in 2007. He has published widely on multiple topics concerning adolescence and developmental methodology, focusing on how complex person-context interactions involving contexts ranging from proximal (e.g., family) to distal (e.g., historical time) inform risk behavior and adjustment across adolescence. His work also focuses on how these processes vary both within and across race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual-minority status. Much of his current research focuses on how historical variation in the frequency and pattern of adolescent and young adult transitions has altered life-course norms differentially across gender and race, including the normative, developmental course of substance use. His work has been funded by NIAAA, NIMHD, NIDA, and NSF, and he has served on multiple NIH and NSF review panels as well as the editorial boards for American Psychologist, Developmental Psychology, Parenting: Science and Practice, and JRA. He also served as a Program Co-Chair for the 2023 Society for Research on Adolescence annual meeting and the 2018 Society for Research in Child Develoment Special Topic meeting focused on open science and secondary data. More recently, he was elected to the Society for Research on Adolescence Board of Directors (2024-2028).
Ph.D. Developmental Psychology, University of Michigan 2007
My research pays particular attention to (1) contextual transitions associated with early adulthood and their impact on functioning, and (2) the dual impact of distal/adolescent and proximal/early adulthood factors on subsequent adjustment. Some of my more recent work also focuses on the family system and documents, through the latent modeling of dyadic and triadic data, agreement and disagreement among family members regarding family functioning and family relationships.
