As a professor in ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration, Ed Garnero researches the nature of of planetary interiors using the tool of seismology. He works on structures in the deep interior. For example, on Earth, his imaging work includes two continental sized anomalies ("blobs") in the deepest mantle rock. More can be learned from his TedEx talk. Professor Garnero also investigates ultra-low velocity zones -- small regions that maybe be distinct and partially molted sitting atop Earth's core-mantle boundary, 1/2 way to Earth's center.

Seismology permits the study of the inaccesible regions of Earth's interior - from crust to innermost core. For example, analysis of seismic waveforms from earthquakes has helped us to understand that half way to the center of the Earth, where the solid silicate rock mantle meets the liquid molten outer core, exists an environment as diverse in structure, chemistry and dynamics as the planet's surface. The deep mantle and core-mantle boundary region may play a crucial role in the birth of mantle plumes that give rise to hot spot volcanism.
