Krista Puruhito is an educational psychologist, disability advocate, and parent of children with disabilities. Her work, teaching, and advocacy center around improving the lives of individuals and families with disabilities and deconstructing barriers to accessibility. She is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Sanford School.
She has broad interests in learning and motivation, disability advocacy, PTSD in NICU families, and inclusion of individuals with disabilities across environments and the lifespan.
Dr. Puruhito is working with Dr. Adero Allison in the Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services Department to develop courses for neurodivergent students and certificate programs for students with intellectual disabilities. - 2020 - present Participate in the Universal Design Access Technology (UDAT) Working Group to increase inclusive practices and access for individuals with disabilities.
- 2023-2024. The group identified annual goals and executed the following work:
- Designed and launched the Accessible Course Creator Canvas Course. This Course was built by accessibly minded instructional designers and accessibility experts across ASU. Faculty can earn badges for skills learned throughout the course, that culminate in an Accessible Course Creator badge. Our hope is to share the resources and perspective needed to be an accessible course creator.
- ASU Accessibility Awareness Day Conference, October 19th, 2023 - Conference was held in person and streamed online. 356 attendees registered for in person or remote attendance. - 2021 - present Member - Mesa Public Schools Equity Advisory Council
- 2020 - 2022 Co-Chair for the SSFD Lecturer’s Action Committee. This committee works to come up with innovative solutions to problems that non-tenured teaching faculty in SSFD are currently facing.
- 2019 - present Ambassador Family- Southwest Human Development. Our goal as an ambassador family is to help promote early intervention services for children with disabilities and developmental delays. This involves speaking at events and fundraisers
- 2018 - 21 Fieldwork Director for online graduate programs – in addition to teaching the Capstone course, I manage the proposal process for all students. This involves reviewing, requesting revisions, and approving proposals as well as communicating with fieldwork sites before, during, and after the session.
- 2018 - present Member – Parent Teacher Organization and School Improvement Advisory Council at Highland Arts Elementary. The goal of my involvement in this organization is to provide support for students and teachers and to advocate for an inclusive learning environment for all students. This includes the incorporation of trauma sensitive schools initiatives as well as work on equity and diversity.
