Lisa Spanierman

Lisa B. Spanierman is a professor in the School of Counseling and Counseling Psychology. She served as Associate Dean for Academic Personnel in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts from 2021–2024. She is an American Psychological Association (APA) Fellow, served from 2012–2015 as vice president for scientific affairs for APA's Society of Counseling Psychology, and has received several teaching awards including the University of Illinois Provost's Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching.

With more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, her research focuses on racial microaggressions and white individuals' racial attitudes. With Derald Wing Sue, she co-authored the second edition of Microaggressions in Everyday Life (2020) and Breaking the Deadly Dance of Racism (2026). She is also an associate editor of the forthcoming APA Handbook of Counseling Psychology (2nd ed.).

During 2018–2019 she was fellow–in–residence at the ZiF (Center for Interdisciplinary Research) in Bielefeld, Germany, and in June 2022 co-led a conference there with Andreas Zick titled, Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions: International Manifestations, Interdisciplinary Interventions. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Institute for Interdisciplinary Conflict and Violence Research at Bielefeld University (2025–2030).
