Long Bio

As a cell biologist, Doug Chandler studies how sperm interact with eggs during fertilization. Using a combination of molecular, physiological and microscopic techniques, he and his research team investigate how sperm respond to the chemical signals of proteins and peptides given off by eggs, and, how these signals increase the probability of fertilization.

Professor Chandler’s research currently focuses on the amphibian protein allurin, which is produced in the frog oviduct, incorporated into the jelly surrounding the egg, and then released when the egg is spawned. Peptides that mimic allurin attract both amphibian and mammalian sperm and are being studied for possible uses in assisted reproduction
