Frédéric Canovas attended the University of Lyon, where he graduated with a major in modern French literature while writing his MA thesis on the works of Yves Navarre. He went on to complete a PhD degree in French and Italian literature at the University of Oregon, under the guidance of Françoise Calin and Claude Foucart. After finishing the PhD program and while teaching at Reed College, Dr. Canovas completed his literature training at the University of Lyon with a post-doctorate in Textologie and génétique des textes.
During his career as a teacher and scholar, Dr. Canovas has garnered numerous accolades including the Zebulon Pearce Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU. His research has been funded by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Carnegie Institute for the Arts.
Dr. Canovas is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of French and Italian in the School of International Letters and Culture. His research focuses on modern French literature, particularly the works of André Gide, Colette, René Crevel, Jean Cocteau and Paul Léautaud. As an associate member of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (UMR 5317), he has been working on the relationships between text and images in illustrated books with an emphasis on the representation of gender and sexuality.

Dr. Canovas specializes in the study of French poetry and narrative from Baudelaire to Surrealism. He has worked extensively on the autobiographical writings of André Gide, Jean Cocteau, Paul Léautaud, Julien Green, among others. His other interests are the history of the book and illustrated books from the 19th century to Surrealism and the relationship between text and image. His research has been supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Carnegie Institute for the Arts.
