Long Bio

Emily Zawacki is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the School of Earth and Space Exploration working with OpenTopography and UNAVCO on outreach and communications.

Zawacki has a primary research focus in the intersection between geomorphology, tectonics/structural geology, sedimentary geology, and paleoanthropology. She is a member of the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP). Additionally, she also has a secondary research focus in the field of volcanology, working with Amanda Clarke.

Research Interests

My research interests center around: geological and environmental context of hominin evolution, use of cosmogenic radionuclides and low-temperature thermochronology to reconstruct paleoerosion rates, tetonic geomorphology, geologic hazards.

My dissertation research is a part of the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP). I am working to reconstruct Plio-Pleistocene paleoerosion rates and sediment provenance at HSPDP localities along the East African Rift System to investigate tectonic and climatic influences on early hominin landscapes.

For my secondary project, I am working with Amanda Clarke to reconstruct one of the youngest explosive basaltic eruptions at the Pinacate volcanic field (Sonora, Mexico).
