Danko Sipka is a professor of Slavic languages and applied linguistics at Arizona State University, where he teaches Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Slavic and general linguistics in the School of International Letters and Cultures. He has been the coordinator of Slavic Languages and Cultures since 2011, the head of the German, Romanian, and Slavic Faculty (2018-2020), the head of the Linguistics Section (2020-), and the lead of the Language Instruction Standardization Initiative. He also holds a titular (presidential) professorship conferred upon him by the president of the Republic of Poland.
His experience includes stints at the universities of Sarajevo, Belgrade (former Yugoslavia), Poznan, Wroclaw, Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University (Poland), the universities of Munich and Dusseldorf (Germany), Hokkaido University (Japan), the Australian National University (Australia), the University of Illinois, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University (USA). Sipka served as a senior linguist or consultant to numerous language industry companies, such as McNeil Technologies, Microsoft, Inxight, Comprehensive Language Center, Glyph, TranExp, Avant Assessment, Franklin Electronic Publishers, Microsoft Proofing Unit, and others. He holds a doctorate in linguistics from the U. of Belgrade, a doctorate in psychology from the Polish Academy of Sciences, and a master's in Russian from the University of Poznan. Professor Sipka is an ACTFL-certified Oral Proficiency Tester for Polish and English.
Sipka's research interests include lexicography, lexicology, linguistic anthropology, lexical and inflectional morphology, computational linguistics, and computer-assisted learning. His most recent monograhps are: "The Geography of Words" (2022), "Lexical Layers of Identity" (2019, paperback 2021) and "Lexical Conflict: Theory and Practice" (hardback 2015, paperback 2019) all three with Cambridge University Press. His publications encompass more than 150 papers and reviews as well as 30 books, including: "SerboCroatian-English Colloquial Dictionary," (Springfield: Dunwoody Press, 2000, p. i-xxxiv, 1-664), "Dictionary of Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian New Words," (Springfield: Dunwoody Press, 2002, p. i-xii, 1-130), and "A Comparative Reference Grammar of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian," (Springfield: Dunwoody Press, 2007, 1-740).
Professor Sipka has presented invited lectures and keynote talks in the United States, Japan, Poland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Less Commonly Taught Languages (2008-2020).
