I am an Associate Professor of American Studies and English at Arizona State University. I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees at California State University at Sacramento, and my doctorate at the University of Minnesota.
At ASU West, I have taught American Literature Before 1865, American Literature Since 1865, American Romanticism, American Poetry, Major American Novels, The American Novel 1900-1960, The American Novel Since 1960, The Literature of the American West, The Literature of the American South, African American Literature, American Gothic, Literature for Young Adults, The Short Story, Science Fiction, Magical Realism, Comedy, Crime, Westerns, Fantasy, Horror, American Cultural History Before 1865, American Cultural History Since 1865, and American Popular Music.
My publications include articles on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Charles Chesnutt, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Edith Wharton, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Nathanael West, Zora Neale Hurston, Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, Saul Bellow, Cynthia Ozick, Kurt Vonnegut, and Leslie Marmon Silko. My book on Shirley Jackson appeared on SUNY Press, and my next book is about James Purdy.
In addition, I’ve held held two Fulbrights. The first was in Denmark, and the second was in Sweden. I also received an NEH grant to attend the Institute on Realism at the University of California at Berkeley.
My hobby is collecting guitars, banjos, mandolins, and stray dogs. In addition, I recently took up edible landscaping and festooned my yard with forty-four fruit and nut trees.
