As a scholar, Dan Bivona has published three books on 19th and 20th century British literature and culture as well as a co-edited collection and a number of essays. He counts among his fields of interest 19th and 20th century fiction, travel literature, the literature of Empire, literary theory, 19th century sexuality, and science and literature. His recent work has taken him to the study of animal architecture and 19th century theories of mind.
Bivona came to ASU in 1996 after teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. Tenured in 1999, he served successively as associate chair of the English department (1998-2000), chair of English (2000-2002), associate dean for academic programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) (2002-2004), and divisional dean of undergraduate programs (2004-2007). While serving in the latter two positions Bivona was responsible for organizing the CLAS Learning Communities Institute.
