Frank Dillon

Dr. Frank Dillon joined the faculty of the School of Counseling and Counseling Psychology in 2017. Prior to ASU, he held faculty appointments as an Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University at Albany (2017-2014), an Associate Professor of Social Work at Florida International University (2014-2007), and a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (2007-2002).

His research is scientifically driven and supports interdisciplinary efforts to eliminate health disparities in the United States. His scholarship examines cultural, psychological, and other psychosocial determinants of mental health, substance use, and HIV-related health outcomes, with the broader goal of informing interventions and promoting health equity.

Since 2002, Dr. Dillon has described his work in peer-reviewed, impactful journals, such as Addictive Behaviors, Frontiers in Public Health, Psychotherapy Research, the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, Psychotherapy, and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors among many others. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Institute for Mental Health Research.

Looking ahead, Dr. Dillon is developing an emerging direction in his research program focused on improving mental health services and care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially people with Down syndrome. This new work builds upon his longstanding commitment to addressing pressing health disparities in the United States.

Dr. Dillon is also a licensed psychologist in Arizona and a Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association (Division 17 ). He also has contributed to the field through ways such as editorial board service for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, and The Counseling Psychologist, among other professional roles.

Over the past nine years, Dr. Dillon has taught eight distinct courses at ASU, including Substance Use Disorders, Addictions, & Therapy; Assessment & Diagnosis; Prevention & Consultation; Social Bases of Behavior; Addictions I - Foundations and Basic Principles; Research Methods in Counseling Psychology; Advanced Counseling Theories; and Internship in Counseling. He also successfully supervised (as Chair) the dissertation projects of eight doctoral students in ASU’s Counseling Psychology PhD program to date.
