Dr. Frank Dillon joined the faculty of the School of Counseling and Counseling Psychology in 2017. His research is scientifically driven and supports interdisciplinary efforts to eliminate health disparities in the United States. Specifically, his work (1) examines cultural and psychosocial determinants of health, including psychological distress, substance use, and HIV, and (2) advances initiatives promoting health equity.
Since 2002, Dr. Dillon has published extensively on these topics in leading journals, including the Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Institute for Mental Health Research. Additionally, he has served as a reviewer for NIH, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and other funding agencies focused on health and health disparities.
While primarily a researcher, Dr. Dillon is also a licensed psychologist in Arizona and a Fellow of Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. He has contributed to the field through editorial board service for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, and The Counseling Psychologist, among other professional roles.
Dr. Dillon has taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses at ASU, including Assessment & Diagnosis, Prevention & Consultation, Social Bases of Behavior, Addictions I - Foundations and Basic Principles, Research Methods in Counseling Psychology, Advanced Counseling Theories, and Internship in Counseling. He has also had the honor of successfully chairing the dissertation projects of seven doctoral students in ASU’s Counseling Psychology PhD program.
