Rob Harris is a geneticist and developmental biologist, whose research combines genetic, molecular and imaging techniques to explore the fundamental and complex phenomenon of tissue regeneration.
Using the powerful genetic tools available in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, together with whole genome approaches, his work aims to identify and characterize genomic programs that are activated in response to tissue injury, and use this information to firstly understand why organs and tissues tend to lose the ability to regenerate as they develop, and secondly how different types of damage (e.g. injuries that invoke programmed cell death versus necrosis) influence the mechansims of regeneration. With this knowledge his group ultimately aims to discover novel genetic manipulations that can be used to improve or induce de novo regeneration in non-regenerating tissues.
Rob Harris is received his PhD from the University of Manchester in England, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. He went on to complete his postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Life Sciences Research Foundation.
