Michael Dugger obtained a merged physics/mathematics undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University. Since that time, Michael has been associated with Arizona State University. In 2001 Professor Dugger successfully defended his dissertation on eta(547) and eta(958) meson photoproduction on the proton, graduating with a doctorate from Arizona State University. Immediately after he became a postdoctoral fellow, then an assistant research professor (2006), an associate research professor (2013) and is currently an associate professor (2017). The bulk of Professor Dugger's research has been associated with the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility located in Newport News, Virginia, where a multi-GeV electron beam is utilized to produce physics events related to the structure of the strongly interacting systems of quarks.

The vast majority of the mass in an atom is contained within a nucleus that is comprised of nucleons (neutrons and protons). Each nucleon contains three quarks that communicate to each other by way of the strong force through gluon fields. In addition to the family of three quark objects (baryons), there are many known bound states made up of a quark and anti-quark. The family of quark anti-quark objects are called mesons and are the primary way in which information flows between the nucleons that make up the nucleus of an atom. The theoretical framework for understanding the strongly interacting quark systems is called Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).
It is believed that QCD is the correct theory for strongly interacting systems, however QCD is very difficult theory for calculating the properties of bound states. At this time no one has been able to use QCD to calculate the spectrum of baryons or mesons. Because of the difficulty theorist have in calculating bound quark states using QCD, many theorists have developed models of the baryons and mesons by guessing what symmetries and degrees of freedom within QCD are most essential to the question of bound state quarks. This is challenging work and requires detail experimental information to help illuminate the way forward.
Theoretical models for hadrons (bound quark systems that include baryons, mesons) tend to over estimate the number of excited neutron and proton states (called resonances), leading to the missing resonance problem. On the experimental side, the discovery of a full resonance picture is hampered by the fact that most of the resonances are broad and overlapping, making the determination of individual resonances, and properties thereof, difficult. To resolve individual resonances, cross section measurements are not enough, leading to the need for polarization observables.
Another question that needs to be addressed, is what type of hadronic matter is possible. There is no theoretical justification within QCD to exclude hadrons beyond mesons and baryons. There might well exist "exotic" hadrons comprised of four or more quarks, and even the case of zero quarks (glueballs). Of the exotic hadrons a hybrid meson is one possibility. The hybrid meson can be thought of as a normal meson state where one of more gluons has been promoted from virtual to real.
Dr. Dugger's research interests are in determining the resonance structure of baryons and in finding exotic QCD objects to help us better understand strongly interacting systems. To this end, Michael is a member of two large collaboration of physicists: the CEBAF (Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility) Large Acceptance Spectrometer Collaboration (CLAS), and the GlueX collaboration. Dr. Dugger's CLAS collaboration efforts center on determining the details of the baryon resonance structure by measuring differential cross section, as well as various polarization observables. The GlueX portion of his research efforts deal with the observation of potential hybrid meson states. As part of his GlueX involvement, Dr. Dugger designed and built, with the assistance of students, a novel photon polarimeter that uses the production of electron-positron pairs of an atomic electron to determine the polarization of a high-energy photon beam that is used to create mesons by way of photoproduction from a proton target. The polarization information of the incident photon beam is vital in helping determine if a produced meson can be identified as exotic. Dr. Dugger is also exploring possible participation in a collaborative effort to establish a kaon beam capability at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX detector. The kaon beam, having net strangeness, will be a very useful tool in creating excited cascade states that have a missing resonance problem that is even more pronounced than that of the proton and neutron.
