Katie Surrey
I graduated from Connecticut College in May 2014 with a BA in Environmental Science, and a minor in English Literature. I have a strong passion for wildlife conservation, animal behavior and ecological preservation, and I am currently studying the intersection between human-wildlife interactions through the lens of animal behavior, with the aim of establishing more effective, non-invasive conservation methodology.
My current project focuses on the impacts of the wildlife-based ecotourism industry in Panama and the physiological stress impacts it has on the wildlife of the region, as well as the socioeconomic impacts for the local community. The industry has experienced increased growth and popularity in the region, although the current regulation enforcement is severely lacking. It is the hope that through this research we can strengthen the marine Conservation Management Plan developed by the authorities of Panama, and use this information to inform on future development of a more sustainable, wildlife-based ecotourism industry.
