Long Bio
Alex Gilbert is a doctoral candidate in the Linguistics & Applied Linguistics Program whose research focuses on grammatical theory and the biology of language. Their dissertation examines the evolution, transmission, and variation of grammatical gender systems from a biolinguistic perspective. They have a broad academic background in the humanities and social sciences—notably history, philosophy, and anthropology—although their work has shifted toward biology, cognitive science, and mathematics. Formal linguistics—especially syntax and semantics—has and continues to serve as the central grounding force in spite of these vicissitudes. Originally from Knoxville, TN, they received their B.A. in the Interdisciplinary Program in Linguistics from the University of Tennessee in 2016 and their M.A. in Linguistics & Applied Linguistics from ASU in 2024.
