John K. Hendrickson is a Teaching Professor in the School of Molecular Sciences at Arizona State University, where he has taught organic and general chemistry for over two decades. He holds B.S. degrees in Zoology and Psychology, an M.S. in Organic Chemistry, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry (organic, quantum/computational focus), all from ASU. His courses include General Chemistry (CHM 113 and 116), Chemistry and Society (CHM 107/108), a science communication seminar (CHM 394), and various special topics courses. He is the author of the textbook Chemistry in the World (Cognella, 4th ed.) and its accompanying ancillary materials.
Beyond the classroom, Hendrickson teaches for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at ASU and for Northwestern University's Osher National Resource Center, where he develops and delivers courses on chemistry and physics topics—including quantum mechanics, nutritional chemistry, and the history of science—for adult lifelong-learning audiences nationally. He chairs the OLLI at ASU Faculty Instructor Committee and serves on its Leadership Council.
Hendrickson's broader work centers on science communication, accessibility, and inclusive pedagogy. He serves as a subject matter and accessibility consultant for OpenStax (Rice University), where he has served as DEI reviewer, content reviewer, and alt-text author for several of their Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry texts. As an associate researcher with ADVANCEGeo, he has co-authored research ethics training materials and a bystander-intervention trainer's guide, and has presented on inclusive language and science communication at national conferences. He chairs the SMS MOSAIC Committee and spearheaded the SMS Mosaic Project. He is a mentor with Out in STEM (oSTEM), Out to Innovate, and the ASU HUES graduate mentoring community, and holds memberships in the National Association of Science Writers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, among other professional affiliations.
