Lauren Weidner is an Assistant Professor of Forensic Entomology in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SMNS) and the Program Lead for the undergraduate Forensic Science Programs (online and on ground) housed in the New College School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences on West Campus. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science with a focus in molecular biology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 2010 followed by her Ph.D. in Entomology from Rutgers University in 2016. Dr. Weidner is currently the president of the North American Forensic Entomology Association (NAFEA) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Entomology being one of twenty certified in North America.
Dr. Weidner’s research interests focus primarily on improving the field of forensic entomology in Arizona and the Southwestern United States. Specifically, she is interested in the biodiversity and species composition of forensically important blow flies throughout Arizona, larval morphology of these insects as well as the impact of different environmental and external facts on blow fly development. Additionally, she examines initial insect activity and colonization in extreme environments.
Dr. Weidner’s work on forensic entomology has been published in various journals including The Journal of Forensic Science, Journal of Medical Entomology and Forensic Science International. She has presented her work at national and international conferences spanning both entomology and forensic backgrounds.
