Sabrina Taylor is a PhD student in the Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology in the College of Global Futures as well as a full time employee of the City of Phoenix. She currently serves the city as a detective in the Office of Continuing Improvement, and is responsible for running the existing Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program, designing and implementing innovative programing to reduce injustice and improve equity in the police department's response to people in crisis, and assisting with the ongoing Department of Justice Investigation into potential violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to mental health.
Current and recent projects include:
- Lead author of a chapter to be included in the forth coming publication titled Routledge International Handbook of Critical Policing Studies.
- Lead author on a paper submitted to the Criminal Justice Policy Review which is currently awaiting viewer selection and was submitted for consideration in their special edition on Behavioral Health, public Safety and Justice.
- Working with ASU SolarSPELL Health to address health literacy concerns in Phoenix Police officer interaction with the public during times of health emergencies.
- Lead researcher on a project to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the current mental health crisis system in Maricopa county, Arizona, funded by a grant from the COPS office within the Department of Justice.
Teaching experience:
- 10 years of experience in the planing, designing, and implementation of training on mental health for police officers in the state of Arizona.
- Certified General Instructor and Subject Matter Expert (SME) with regards to police response to behavioral health crisis by the Arizona Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) Board.
- Certified flight instructor with 2 years of experience training new pilots.
