Heather Wetherholt

A graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Wetherholt is a sci-fi/fantasy enthusiast, tabletop role play gamer, and scholar of Religion in America and Religion in Popular Culture. Dr. Wetherholt received her degree in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies (SHPRS) and teaches classes on Religion in America, Religions of the World, Witchcraft and Heresy in Europe, Women, Gender, and Religion, and Religion and Popular Culture.

Wetherholt's research engages with comics and graphic narratives, examining psychological connections between comics and their readers through graphic memoirs. Her work is grounded in U.S. history and decolonial theory, with a heavy emphasis on the development of the comics industry within the U.S. and the impact of the underground comics movement on 21st-century comics. Wetherholt's work in Religion and Popular Culture encompasses literature, music, film, and more, highlighting the ever-present theme and impact of religion in popular, widely consumed content.
