Kyle Ramsay

Kyle Ramsay is a Professor of Practice with the Future Security Initiative in the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University and an Associate Editor at Small Wars Journal. A retired infantry soldier, officer, and public servant, he is a national security professional with experience leading Canadian, coalition, and partner forces during combat operations.

His current research examines the enduring utility of persistent multi-domain capacity-building operations (CBOs) as instruments of national and international security policy, with particular emphasis on partner force development, integrated responses to complex humanitarian emergencies, the environmental and sociopolitical drivers of insecurity and conflict, institutional and societal resilience, governance and rule-of-law capacity, and the weaponization of the information environment. More broadly, his work focuses on strengthening institutional resilience by examining the operational challenges associated with maintaining secure, predictable, and rules-based security environments.

Drawing on operational experience, he works to bridge the cognitive gap between national security policy and operational realities. His scholarship emphasizes translating strategic objectives into effective policy and operational approaches that account for the complexities of contemporary conflict, strategic competition, and contested security environments.
