Dr. Pathikonda’s research interests revolve around studying complex problems in turbulent fluid flow phenomena related to aerospace, energy, chemical engineering, maritime and atmospheric sciences. His core expertise involves the use of advanced optical diagnostics to study wall-bounded flows, shear-driven turbulent mixing, active mixing, reacting flows, etc. He designs laboratory experiments to identify and measure fundamental turbulence behavior via application of laser-based (particle image velocimetry, laser-induced fluorescence, etc.) and optical spectroscopic techniques. The research goals typically aim to gain better understanding of the complex physics and enhance the predictive capabilities to resolve engineering and natural phenomena.
Dr. Pathikonda received his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2017, and Masters in Aerospace Engineering in 2013 from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining ASU, he has worked at Georgia Institute of Technology on problems such as variable-density and variable-viscosity mixing and shock- and blast-wave driven instabilities. He has also worked at Indian Institute of Science and Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research at Bangalore as a Research Fellow. He is a recipient of the Stanley Weiss Outstanding Dissertation Award (2017), RISE Fellowship (2012), and Merit Scholarship for Academic Excellence (2006).
