Doris Provine is an Emeritus Professor of justice and social inquiry in the School of Social Transformation. She came to Arizona State University in 2001 to direct the then School of Justice Studies and served in that role for six years. Her first appointment was at Syracuse University where she rose to full professor and chaired the department. She has served in Washington twice, once as director of the Law and Social Sciences Program at the National Science Foundation, and earlier as a Judicial Fellow assigned to the Federal Judicial Center. She has also taught abroad in Strasbourg, France; Madrid, Spain; and Geneva, Switzerland. Her areas of interest reflect her background in law and political science. Some of her research has focused on courts and policies related to them, most recently the role racism has played in the war on drugs. She is the author of "Unequal Under Law: Race and the War on Drugs" (2007) and most recently lead co-author of "Policing Immigrants: Local Law Enforcement on the Frontllines" (2016). Her current work traces the evolution of racialized borders with a focus on Arizona.
