Dr. Ben Schoenekase is a designer, educator, and researcher playing on the intersection of subjectivity, materiality, and authorship. Through a series of thirty-seven self-signing avatars (heteronyms/personas), Schoenekase’s work flickers, flexes, and folds into a variety of assemblages. Housed between architecture, art history, design research, fashion design, fine art, graphic design, and product design, Schoenekase’s various academic positions have integrated conceptual frames from various professions to provide students with a compassionate space for experimental aesthetics, narratives, and storytelling across each disciplinary field.
Rooted in "abnatural" constructivist principles, his classes foster a hands-on collaborative space where students build knowledge through creative projects that bridge history, design, and the arts. Schoenekase’s classroom co-creates an environment that nurtures both creative freedom and critical reflection, guiding students to develop their unique voices and engage thoughtfully with materials and ideas while challenging the traditional boundaries of academic conventions.
Aside from the University, Schoenekase works as a collaborator/designer/owner of DOGTEETH Studio and {FiBS} where recent projects include nonhuman/robot wearables, audio-visual environments, and posthuman animations. Finally, and most importantly, he is a member of the American Outlaws (USMNT), a one-third-owner of a brewery in Wylie, TX (Glen Echo Brewing), and an amateur chef with his partner Luz.
