Chelsea Haines

Chelsea Haines teaches art history at ASU. Her primary research interests include modern and contemporary art and architecture of the Middle East; intersections among modernism, nationalism, and internationalism; and histories of museums and exhibitions. Chelsea has previously taught art and architecture history and curatorial studies at SUNY Purchase, City College, Lehman College, and Parsons, The New School for Design. 

Since 2009, she has organized exhibitions and public programs for institutions such as Independent Curators International, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art, Portland State University, the Shanghai Biennial, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School. She recently co-edited a special issue of the journal ARTMargins on Art, Institutions, and Internationalism, 1945–1973 (Summer 2019) as well as the book Entry Points: The Vera List Center Field Guide on Art and Social Justice (Duke University Press 2015).

Her current book project explores the role of art exhibitions in Israeli nation-building from the founding of the state in 1948 to the establishment of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. She was a Fulbright Fellow to Israel from 2017–18 and a Presidential Research Fellow at The Center for the Humanities at The Graduate Center from 2013–17.
