Long Bio
Arturo P. Perez Lopez is a PhD student at Arizona State University. His research interests include the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, with a particular focus on the civil rights history of the Southwest.
His current work examines the civil rights history of Phoenix, particularly in South Phoenix. Using oral histories and traditional primary sources, he documents the everyday lives and activism of individuals, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the civil rights movement in the valley. His research illuminates the often-overlooked civil rights movement in Phoenix and challenges the negative portrayal of South Phoenix as synonymous with crime, presenting it instead as a place that one narrator called the "best kept secret in the city."
