Carol Mueller is professor of sociology and Director of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences of New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. She came to Arizona more than 20 years ago after a long stay on the East coast with teaching positions at Wellesley College, Brandeis, Tufts and Harvard universities. She is best known as a social movements scholar, with particular attention to the international women’s movement. She has published books on social movement theory (with Aldon Morris), "Frontiers of Social Movement Theory" (Yale); "The Politics of the Gender Gap" (SAGE); "The Women’s Movements of the United States and Western Europe" with Mary Katzenstein (Temple) and "Repression and Mobilization" (Minnesota) with Chris Davenport and Hank Johnston as well as dozens of articles and book chapters. Currently, she has an edited volume under review on "Localizing Human Rights Abuses: The U.S.-Mexico Experience" (with Bill Simmons).
In her work at ASU on human rights and the U.S.-Mexican border, she was the original organizer of the first Border Forum, “Gender Justice and the Border,” at the West campus (with Bill Simmons) and the creation of the master's program in social justice and human rights (with Bill Simmons). Since 2003, she has worked on an ever-expanding research project on transnational activism concerning the femicide in Ciudad Juarez with several dozen undergraduate students. Students have joined in activism, conference presentations as well as the publishing endeavors involved in academic scholarship.
