Dr. Joseph Paszek has taught college writing for more than 15 years, specializing in rhetoric and composition with research interests in writing transfer, rhetorical genre studies, and metacognition in writing pedagogy. He previously directed both the Writing Program and the University Writing Center at the University of Detroit Mercy, where he designed and assessed first-year writing curricula, led faculty development workshops, and advanced campus-wide writing initiatives.
His scholarship explores the connections between writing pedagogy and the science of learning, focusing on how students carry writing knowledge across different contexts. His work has appeared in Written Communication and in collections such as Contemporary Perspectives on Cognition and Writing and Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer. He has presented at major conferences, including the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the Council of Writing Program Administrators Conference, and the International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference.
Most recently, his collaborative projects have examined genre awareness, anti-racist writing pedagogy, and the validation of assessment tools for writing transfer. This work has been supported by grants such as the CCCC Research Initiative and external funding through the Writing Transfer Project.
Dr. Joseph Paszek holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan, an M.S. in Psychology with a focus in Industrial/Organizational from Purdue University Global, and a B.A. in English from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Dr. Paszek is currently working with his research team (The Writing Transfer project) to develop and validate an instrument that is designed to measure students’ understanding of key genre concepts in writing studies. Adapted from proven methods in STEM education, the Genre Concept Inventory (GCI) aims to provide an efficient, scalable way to assess genre awareness, a critical factor in students’ ability to transfer writing knowledge across contexts. By offering reliable, large-scale data, the instrument enables instructors, researchers, and writing program administrators to evaluate curricula, identify misconceptions, and refine pedagogy.
