Janet Neisewander is a behavioral neuroscientist who uses animal models to study mechanisms of drug abuse. She examines social and environmental influences on initiation of drug self-administration, the development of drug-taking habits, and motivation to seek drug after prolonged periods of abstinence. To examine the neural mechanisms involved in these behaviors, her research team uses viral-mediated gene transfer, chemogenetics, molecular imaging techniques, RNAseq, and qt-PCR. Her lab is now establishing electro-physiological and mathematical modeling methods.
Neisewander’s work focuses mainly on cocaine and nicotine—both stimulant drugs. Her research contributes to understanding the development and treatment of drug addiction. It also provides new knowledge of the brain mechanisms involved in emotional processing, and learning and memory.
