Julie Liss is an associate dean and professor in the College of Health Solutions. During more than 2 decades as PI of NIH-funded grants, her research has explored the production and perception of dysarthric speech; the way that listeners perceive impaired speech; and what factors aid in improving communication between people with motor speech disorders and those around them. The goal has been to understand both the ways in which neurological damage or disease impacts speech, language, and cognition as a window to the brain; and to capture how these changes in speech, language, and cognition impact quality of life. The fruits of this research are now being translated to clinical practice and industry through collaborations with experts in speech signal processing, data science, neuroscience and linguistics. She is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has served as Editor-in-Chief for the discipline's flagship Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research.
