Ebenezer Nana Kwaku Boateng, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Arizona State University, primarily affiliated with the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, with an additional affiliation with the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience Center under ASU’s Knowledge Enterprise. He applies geospatial technologies to advance climate resilience, environmental sustainability, conservation, and public health. His research focuses on understanding and addressing environmental risks in urban systems, including the development of advanced workflows for extreme heat mapping to better identify and mitigate heat-related vulnerabilities.
Prior to joining Arizona State University, Dr. Boateng served at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, as a Graduate Assistant and Teaching Assistant, where he taught and supported courses in GIS, remote sensing, cartography, statistical methods, and landscape ecology. His research portfolio is interdisciplinary, spanning climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, water resource management, conservation, and public health. He has contributed to numerous funded research projects with organizations such as the International Water Management Institute, World Vision, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, taking on roles ranging from geospatial analyst and data manager to co-investigator. He has also supervised undergraduate research and played a key role in building capacity in geospatial science.
Dr. Boateng is a prolific scholar with an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications addressing climate resilience, agricultural sustainability, conservation, and spatial inequalities in health across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. His work has been presented at major international conferences, including the American Association of Geographers (AAG), ESRI User Conference, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), where he has contributed to advancing discussions on geospatial approaches to sustainability and resilience.
Beyond his academic work, Dr. Boateng is actively engaged in the global YouthMappers network, where he contributes to advancing open geospatial data and capacity building across more than 80 countries. He previously served as the YouthMappers Coordinator at the University of Cape Coast, mentoring students and leading mapping initiatives addressing local development challenges. He currently serves as an ArcGIS Administrator within the global network, supporting technical training, project implementation, and knowledge exchange. Through these roles, he is committed to empowering young people to apply geospatial technologies for community resilience, sustainable development, and humanitarian action.
Proficient in tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, and Python, Dr. Boateng integrates technical expertise with interdisciplinary insight to produce impactful and policy-relevant research. Through his work, he continues to advance the role of geospatial science in building more resilient, equitable, and sustainable communities worldwide.
