Dr. Laura Atkinson is a clinical associate professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teacher's College (MLFTC). Prior to joining the MLFTC faculty, she served as the coordinator of the Urban Professional Learning Schools Initiative (UPLSI) master’s program at ASU and assisted in the curriculum development of the program. Dr. Atkinson spent over a decade teaching general and special education and served as the director of an $8.5 million grant at Mississippi State University (ACHIEVE Mississippi). During Dr. Atkinson's tenure at ASU, she has coordinated an accelerated, immersion teacher program, a dual certification program (elementary and special education), developed courses and supervised interns and student teachers. In her current role, Dr. Atkinson is an area lead for the special education program in Teacher Preparation and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in education. Additionally, Dr. Atkinson serves as a member of the CEEDER Center and conducts trainings for educators on using High Leverage Practices (HLPs) to improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities.

Dr. Atkinson’s research interests include pre-service teacher education, professional development for teachers, culturally responsive pedagogy, and inclusive education.
