Pamela Stewart
Pamela Stewart is a historian and senior lecturer emerita, Arizona State University. Dr. Stewart currently pursues her goal of democratizing the historian's skill set to engage the public in contributing to the "doing" of history. She is the chair of the executive board of Arizona Women in Higher Education (AWHE), the Executive Director of Western Association of Women Historians (WAWH), and serves on the board of the Coordinating Council for Women in History (CCWH).
She earned a doctorate in modern European history and women’s studies and received awards for teaching, research and service, including the Coordinating Council for Women in History’s Catherine Prelinger Award and ASU’s Centennial Professorship. She also earned an M.Ed. at ASU in learning design and technologies, where her research and projects focused on expanding diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice (DEISJ) in higher education. A current book manuscript, “Educating the Body Towards Equality: Ina E. Gittings’ Pioneering Path for Women’s Sports in the American West, 1885-1966,” centers the life of athlete and scholar, Ina E. Gittings as she shaped university physical education and athletics in Arizona and the American West. That work will shortly be made available on a publicly-available website. A chapter in, "Reshaping Women’s History: Voices of Nontraditional Women Historians," exposes Stewart’s non-traditional path to an academic career and her next book project on women-headed households in the American West, 1870s-1940s. She has regularly taught with ASU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).
