Stephen is an internationally recognized scholar in adolescent development and health, with a particular focus on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). His research has been field-defining, including early contributions establishing mental and behavioral health disparities among adolescents, and has expanded to examine these disparities across health domains, social contexts (family, schooling), and intersecting identities including race, gender, and housing instability. His record of external funding has emphasized both basic and applied research, with strong engagement in community and policy contexts. He values collaborative and interdisciplinary scholarship, and has demonstrated a deep commitment to mentorship, with many former trainees advancing to tenured academic positions and earning early-career distinctions.
Stephen brings extensive university leadership experience across multiple major institutions, including UC Davis, the University of Arizona, and the University of Texas at Austin. He has held significant roles as director of research institutes, and as department chair and school director, overseeing large, complex academic units with substantial budgets, faculty, staff, and student populations. His leadership has involved strategic vision-building, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthening administrative systems, curriculum innovation, and enhancing student success initiatives. He has successfully navigated diverse institutional contexts—from resource-constrained environments to those requiring organizational restructuring—while building cohesive cultures, improving governance processes, and advancing fundraising and external partnerships.
