Nancy J. Cooke is a professor in Human Systems Engineering at the Polytechnic School, one of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. She is also Senior Scientific Advisor of GSI’s Center for Human, AI, and Robot Teaming. She received her PhD in Cognitive Psychology from New Mexico State University in 1987. Dr. Cooke is a Past President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the past chair of the Board on Human Systems Integration at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. She also chaired a study panel for the National Academies on the Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science. Dr. Cooke was a member of the US Air Force Scientific Advisory board from 2008-2012, and in 2014, she received the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s Arnold M. Small President’s Distinguished Service Award.
Professor Cooke’s research interests include the study of individual and team cognition and its application to the development of cognitive and knowledge engineering methodologies, sensor operator threat detection, cyber and intelligence analysis, remotely-piloted aircraft systems, human-robot teaming, healthcare systems, and emergency response systems. She specializes in the development, application, and evaluation of methodologies to elicit and assess individual and team cognition. Ongoing projects in her group include coordination of human-autonomy teams in the face of unexpected events, Human-Robot Teaming and Situation Awareness, Human-Machine Teaming for Next Generation Combat Vehicle, Artificial Social Intelligence, and Monitoring Human Performance in Real-Time for NAS Safety Prognostics. Her work is funded by DARPA. the Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Laboratory, and NASA and has been widely published.

Dr. Nancy Cooke is a professor of Human Systems Engineering at Arizona State University and Senior Scientific Advisor of ASU’s Center for Human, AI, and Robot Teaming. She currently serves on DARPA’s Information and Science Technology Study Group and is a member of the National Academies committee on Risk Analysis for Nuclear War and Nuclear Terrorism. Dr. Cooke’s research interests include the study of individual and team cognition and its application to the development of cognitive and knowledge engineering methodologies and human-AI-robot teaming in defense operations, urban search and rescue, and distributed space operations.
