Nicholas Murray

Nicholas Murray is Director of Wargaming for the Strategic Thinkers Program. He previously held the role at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Murray's scholarship focuses on Clausewitz's writing and ideas and the evolution of warfighting. He has, with Christopher Pringle, published several scholarly translations of Clausewitz's historical volumes with more to come. Nick has researched, designed, and run hundreds of wargames. His first book studied the development and evolution of trench warfare prior to the First World War.

Nick worked at the U.S. Naval War College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and SUNY Adirondack. He taught strategy and policy, military history, and was a leader of the effort to reintroduce wargaming into the curricula at the service schools. He advised the Office of the Secretary of Defense on Professional Military Education policy, as well as the use of wargaming.

Dr Murray received his doctorate in European history from the University of Oxford. He holds an M.St. in British and European History from Oxford, and he received his B.A.Hons. in War Studies from King's College in London.

He was a high school drop out, who worked a variety of jobs before graduating at 26. He served in the British Army Reserves, and worked full time through the vast majority of his undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

His non-profit work includes serving as a board member of Rocky Hill Country Day School and he has many years of experience working with children with special needs, or in his local animal shelter.
