I study how organizations turn strategy into action, adapt under uncertainty, and deliver change through projects. Drawing on fifteen years of consulting, I bring these challenges to class through cases, simulations, and evidence-based decisions, helping students understand how organizations work and build the confidence and judgment to lead through uncertainty.
My research in strategic management examines how organizations adapt when both their environments and the criteria for success are changing. It connects four areas: organizational adaptation, performance evaluation, strategy implementation, and strategic leadership.
I develop organizational gymnasticness to explain how firms select and switch among adaptation mechanisms as conditions evolve. My work on evaluative regime construction examines how stakeholders establish and contest what counts as success, whose judgments matter, and how competing outcomes should be compared.
Through the strategy-project nexus, I study how projects translate strategic intent into action and how project experience can reshape strategic objectives. My research on executive role design examines how authority, reporting relationships, mandates, and access to resources combine to enable executives to turn formal responsibilities into coordinated action. Chief Sustainability Officers provide the initial empirical setting for this work.
Across these streams, I am interested in how sustainability demands, technological disruption, and differences across institutional and national contexts shape how firms adapt, what outcomes they prioritize, and how they organize to achieve them.
