Patricia Friedrich is a Professor of Sociolinguistics at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. She received her doctorate in English linguistics, with an emphasis on sociolinguistics and a secondary concentration in historical linguistics, from Purdue University in 2001. She also received her master's degree in English from Purdue (1997), earning an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement at the same time. Her undergraduate work was completed at Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil), where she was awarded a dual bachelor's degree in English and Portuguese, languages and literatures, in 1992.
Dr. Friedrich is a sociolinguist whose scholarly interests include language and power, critical applied linguistics, critical theory, cross-cultural communication, language and peace, and the social contruction of mental illness. Her research interests also include world Englishes and the spread of English throughout the world (the politics of English and its interaction with social and economic phenomena). She recently published "Applied Linguistics in the Real World" (Routledge), having also published "The Sociolinguistics of Digital Englishes" (Routledge), "English for Diplomatic Purposes" (ed., Mltilingual Matters) and "The Literary and Linguistic Construction of OCD" (Palgrave) immediately before. She is currently working on a book on anti-racism and linguistcs, and, being also a novelist, on her fourth novel.
She has published more than 35 articles in journals such as World Englishes, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, and English Today and is an editorial board member of International Multilingual Research Journal and a reviewer for World Englishes and TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Quarterly.
Among the New College courses taught by Dr. Friedrich are undergraduate and graduate classes in the history of the English language, the study of language, sociolinguistics, peace studies, forensic linguistics and persuasive writing.
