Kevin McHugh is a cultural geographer with interests in geographical thought & theory and the geohumanities. His research advances understandings of space, place, landscape, and movement in making and imagining worlds. McHugh is engaged in a series of experiments in thermal and olfactory sensing in rethinking bodies, objects, things, spaces and atmospheres. These critical-aesthetic experiments explore post-phenomenologies and elemental geographies in light of the Anthropocene.
McHugh teaches broadly at the undergraduate and graduate levels, has served on 40 Ph.D. committees and 28 M.A. thesis committees, is active in mentoring students in the Barrett Honors College, and has been a Distinguished Nominee for the ASU Parents Association Professor of the Year Award three times. McHugh served as associate director in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, 2011-2014.
