Shelley Haydel is an infectious disease microbiologist researching new antibiotics to fight resistant infections and how bacteria cause lung infections and wound infections. Her research team studies tuberculosis and other related bacteria, MRSA, and other infectious bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. She and her research team are also studying how and why these bacteria cause disease in humans so that they can develop new drugs to halt infections.
Professor Haydel and her team are also working with engineers and chemists to create an instrument that takes less than 2 hours to determine if an infection is resistant to antibiotics and to develop skin glues to prevent wound infections.

Haydel served as the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Life Sciences (SOLS) from 2020 to 2026, overseeing undergraduate degree programs and academic affairs, in coordination with the Director of the School of Life Sciences. As Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs, Haydel focused on the ensuring quality in all facets of our SOLS undergraduate programs, increasing experiential learning opportunities for our undergraduate students, and initiating and advancing faculty and undergraduate education synergy efforts.
From 2017 - 2020, Haydel was the director of the School of Life Sciences Undergraduate Research (SOLUR) program, serving ASU's undergraduate life science students as they begin and advance their research experiences.

- Development and advancement of an innovative imaging technology – Large Volume Scattering imaging (LVSim) system – capable of detecting individual bacterial cells in processed clinical samples and differentiating viable and metabolically inactive cells to develop rapid, automated, phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility tests
- Advance our LVSim phenotypic AST system to perform rapid Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium, and Mycobacterium abscessus phenotypic drug susceptibility and resistance testing with new drugs.
- Biochemical, molecular, and bacterial pathogenesis investigations of the essential M. tuberculosis prrAB two-component regulatory system.
- Developing new drugs that have novel mechanisms of action and function through the essential M. tuberculosis PrrAB two-component regulatory system.
- Development of diarylthiazoles as novel TB and nontuberculous mycobacteria antimicrobials.
- Creating molecular morphoswitchable strains to investigate M. abscessus morphological plasticity, unique pathophysiology traits associated with each morphotype, and the complex interplay between M. abscessus and morphotype-specific immunological responses.
- Advancement of a point-of-care antibiotic susceptibility testing platform for UTIs.
- Developing direct-from-sputum and direct-from-saliva procedures to leverage our isothermal nucleic acid amplification test device as a point-of-care (POC) biosensor for rapid M. tuberculosis detection.
